Humans are a social animal. We evolved in family groups and even now most of us spend our lives in family or social groups. Very few of us would be classed as a lone animal. Very few peoe choose to isolate themselves and live effectively in their own world. The impact this has had on our evolution, especially when it comes to our brains, is massive.
Have you ever struggled to overcome a problem and felt like it's impossible to solve? We have. No one has all the answers. When that happens what's one of the first things we think to do? Ask for help. Our immediate reaction is to involve someone else if appropriate. There's a reason for this. Humans are more effective when trying to problem solve as a team.
Research has shown that when we get together in groups and try to solve problems we are dramatically more effective than trying to do so as individuals. Our ideas and thoughts almost 'bounce' off each other, grow and evolve into something that works. The astonishing thing is that sometimes the answer that is found is very different to the answer any individual could've created by themselves. The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.
How would this have come around? Evolution of the human race. Our ancestors that lived in social groups would've been slightly more effective at surviving than the 'loners' due to a slightly increased problem solving ability. Then, due to natural selection, this trait would've been amplified many times over our evolution until we get to today's group problem solving ability.
Next time you're stuck on a problem, don't know what to do and think it's impossible to find an answer why not involve someone else. Involve more an one person if you want to be even more effective. Allow each person to bring and express their own ideas without fear of ridicule, no matter how crazy they may sound. Then bounce your ideas and adjustments to each there's ideas around and see where it leads. We bet you'll be able to solve most problems you encounter like this!
On another positive you'll also get the other health benefits from social interaction and solving a difficult problem - reduced stress, altered hormone levels and increase in happiness to name a few.
