I bet a lot of people that workout do it because they feel they have to, rather than doing it because they enjoy it. Now don't get me wrong, that's admirable and good for their health etc but how much better would it be if they enjoyed their workouts too?
As I've said before, stress is one of the biggest things in our lives currently that leads to disease. Stress is one of the biggest killers out there. It will impact your chances of contracting pretty much any of the big diseases - heart disease, diabetes, obesity - you name it. The impact on your health and fitness of being stressed continuously is massive. And the stress doesn't have to be big, it's the low level stress that effects you for years and years that's the real danger. Trouble is, that's the one that usually goes unnoticed.
So, if stress is a big killer then why do we stress ourselves over what we eat and howich we exercise? Isn't it counterproductive to do that?
Probably a little yeah. It would be so much better for us to enjoy working out and enjoy eating healthily so we get the benefits without the additional stress. Here's a few tips on how to enjoy your workouts so that you get the most out of them. Once you start enjoying them they usually star acting as stress relief too, rather than adding it.
- variation is key to staying interrested in exercise. If you go to the gym or workout at home then you need to vary your exercises. Sticking to the same ones every time you're working out then not only is your body going to 'get used' to those and not be challenged to adapt bit it'll start to get boring and that's when we lose interest and have to force ourselves to workout.
- having fun is another big motivator. Set yourself a crazy challenge, workout with a friend or push our comfort zones a little by trying a different class or taking some personal training once in a while. I'm currently working on being able to complete a backflip off the floor. Crazy and probably a bit too difficult for me, but I'm giving it a go and having fun whilst I try. Why don't you think of something crazy to train towards!
- rest is important too. Don't force yourself to workout everyday. If you do the right sort of workout a then you'll get fitter and healthier doing them just 3 times a week. Don't forget that you don't get fitter whilst you're working out, it's the time between workouts when your body is recovering that increase your fitness. Don't allow your body time to recover and you won't get the most out of your sessions. Also, forcing yourself to go everyday will increase your stress levels probably.
So there you have it, 3 top tips on how to enjoy your workouts and help them become stress relievers rather than having them add additional stress on you. Give them a go and see how you get on.
