Working out with friends or family will not only increase health and fitness through physical work but also through the social stimulation you have when working with others. You can have a giggle with one another, work hard with one another and breakthrough challenges with one another. This teamwork would've been key to our evolution and our mind and bodies react very well to working in groups. Our brains evolved with group problem solving more than they did working alone. This will also hep build stronger connections to those around you and give a sense of belonging - all great stress reducers. Next time you want a little workout, take a friend or family member and do it together!
Sport is also another way to have fun whilst exercising. We play field hockey (no it's not 'a girls game’) and spend quite a bit of time with our team mates. We train once or twice a week, travel to and from games together and also work hard and support one another during games once or twice a week. When doing this we're working hard, very hard, towards and team focused goal (literally). We have to problem solve with one another, work together and support each other if we want to be successful. These are all great examples of how working as a team can be fun and give more benefits than just getting fitter. Why not pick up a sport? Doesn't have to be as intense as hockey mind you. Why not try tennis, bowling, golf, curling or anything else you can think of. Just do it and you'll soon make new friends and create a new way to have fun whilst exercising for yourself!
Lastly we'd recommend throwing away the shackles of conventional wisdom. Always thought there has to be one best way of working out that suites absolutely everyone? Well, we're sorry to tell you that you're wrong if you have thought that. Everybody is built differently. Everybody has different strengths and weaknesses. Everybody enjoys different things. Don't feel like you have to complete the same exercise as everyone else to get results. It'll be so much better for your mind and body to exercise in a way that you enjoy rather than a way that you don't! Get off the treadmill (unless that's what you enjoy) and start having fun. Go for a run outside, take dogs for a walk (with friends), have fun with weights in the gym, research some new and interesting ways to workout - there's lots of ideas online. Basically go out there and experiment with different ways of having fun whilst working hard. You'll get better results, you'll enjoy your workouts and you'll be much more likely to stick with it! Change it up every time you workout or change it every few weeks - up to you! As long as you feel it's doing some good then keep going! If you get stuck for ideas then consult a professional. See a trainer for a couple of sessions and ask them to show you new exercises, different exercise and things that don't even feel like exercise.
So to summarise today, have fun whilst working out. Include other people in your workouts, include sports in your workouts and throw down the shackles of what you think you should be doing and start doing what you want to! Fun will increase your chance if success and you'll just enjoy it more. Why do exercise you don't like when you can enjoy yourself as you get healthier and fitter?!
