Once again we've been browsing the inter-web looking for new and interesting scientific studies to discuss and highlight. Today we've found one on the BBC website, which doesn't happen too often, that's caught our attention. The headline reads 'Exercise can be as good as pills' and discusses a recent study published in the BMJ.
In this study they analysed hundreds of different trials and their results. They looked at over 340,000 individuals and the impact of exercise and pills on their health and fitness. After analysing all the data they came to the conclusion that exercise is as good for you as medication when treating certain diseases, such as heart disease. In fact, in terms of stroke prevention exercise actually beat medication!
We published an article a short while ago about how we're all to keen to grab pills these days in an attempt to cure diseases when it really might not be the best thing to do. Well now the study has reinforced that even more. Don't get us wrong, medication is fantastic and has a vital role to play in some cases, but this just goes to show that it's not the only answer.
One frustrating (because it should be obvious by now) statement was about how having a good diet, getting regular exercise and good sleep help reduces risk of disease. We're sorry, but by now we should all be aware of that and all practising it daily to stave of disease and stay fit and healthy.
We find it frustrating at times that 'conventional' wisdom dictates that if you're ill you get pills and if they don't work you get more / different ones. On average each person in the UK was given nearly 18 prescriptions in 2010, compared with 11 or so in 2000. Sure some of these would have been vital and life saving but we're just trying to give other options here. Prevent the disease and illness through regular exercise - find out the best ways by reading old articles on our blog or keeping track as we release new ones. Eat healthily - farm fresh meat and veg with nuts, seeds, fruit and dairy. Avoid processed meals and snacks. Get good sleep - about 8 hours a night works well for most people. Stay as stress free as you can. It will all reduce risk of disease and help combat it if you've goth a disease and actually makes life more enjoyable!
E take away from today's blog - you do not need to rely on mediation all the time. Look after your body to prevent disease, look after your body if you have a disease to help fight it and you'll live a healthier and fitter life for longer. It's easy to know what to do, the hard thing is actually doing it!
