Have you ever thought to yourself that your feel particularly bloated hours and hours after a meal? We have. We wake up sometimes after 8 hours of sleep and still feel bloated and uncomfortable from the meal we had the night before, or even from the meal at lunch time. Surely that's got to be a sign that something in our diets isn't quite right? You would imagine so but the issue is we get used to feeling bloated and it becomes something we ignore. So, before reading on today have a think about how your stomach feels now. Have a think if you have ever felt bloated and uncomfortable. Have a think next time you eat a meal and see how you feel.
We're sure that for most people some of the food that you eat will bloat you out. We can say that from experience and from reading the scientific studies that are coming out at the moment suggesting 50% or more people can suffer from this bloating caused by a chemical found in lots of food. Once you understand if you feel bloated then we'd like you to have a go at experimenting with us. Only for a week, but taking a chance to change something in your diet and see if it has a positive effect on you. Even if you don't think you feel bloated ever we'd still suggest giving it a go and see how you feel.
What are we talking about? We're talking about grains and products made in the factories using grains - bread, pasta, bagels etc... There's an increasing portfolio of evidence that suggests more and more people are sensitive to some of the component chemicals found in grains and the gain derived products. This is all the more worrying as the government healthy eating plate will have you consuming a large proportion of grain in your diet to be 'healthy'.
A lot of people kick up a fuss when we talk about grains being unhealthy, advising that humans have grown and eaten grains for millennia. Bread was used to feed the thousands in stories from the bible and would've been around long before that too. Surely if we've been eating it that long it must be ok for us? Well, the bread we eat nowadays is just not the same as it used to be. Ever tested how long the bread you buy in the supermarket lasts before it goes off? Try almost 2 weeks! That's just not normal for 'real' food and definitely wouldn't have been the case thousands of years ago. How does it last so long? A mix of genetically engineered grains and added chemicals. Even forgetting about the chemicals (for example if you make your own bread) you still need to be careful with the grains.
Grain preparation has changed in recent years. We don't soak our grains and allow them to ferment before making flour. We don't allow the grains to sprout a little before making the flour - common practises in past years. We just take the grain, grind it up and eat it as it is. The problem with this is we're missing a vital part of the preparation that gets rid of huge quantities of 'anti-nutrients' found in grain. Stuff such as gluten and gliadin. That means these chemicals, along with others, are available in much higher numbers than ever before. Mix that with the increasing number of people showing some form of intolerance and there you have your abdominal bloating, internal inflammations, gastrointestinal tract damage and a host of other problems.
What to do? Go grain free for a week. That's up challenge to you. Don't eat bread, pasta, bagels or other grain based food. Replace it with more veg or more meat. Have pancakes made of egg and banana rather than flour - do more research online for great grain free recipes. After the week of removing grain from your diet see how you feel. Compare the differences. We bet most of you will feel better! Let us know your results.
